Description
This Regulator is now known as our “Type 1” Regulator, Formally known as Essex Rotary Enhanced Oil Pressure Regulator for 03-08 RX-8
This Regulator will also fit older engines found in the 12a from the first Generation RX-7 SA22c and FB’s as well as the 13b’s found in all second Generation RX-7 FC3s.
This oil pressure regulator from Essex Rotary is based on a modified Mazda regulator but is designed to run a higher maximum oil pressure. Bringing the standard pressure on a series 1 RX-8 from from a maximum of 80 psi and increasing it to around 110psi this increased oil pressure means that your series 1 engine will now run pressures much closer to that of the later series 2 RX-8 (R3)
Compatible with the following
- Old School Rotary Engines pre 1979
- RX-7 SA22c
- RX-7 FB
- RX-7 FC3s EGI-Non Turbo
- RX-7 FC3s Tuebo II
- RX-8 Series 1 2003-2008
This makes the Essex Rotary enhanced oil pressure regulator great for ported ad high revving applications, equally suited in a standard engine its a great upgrade for piece of mind.
The main advantage of the increased oil pressure would be to increase bearing protection over that of the standard 80psi found in the series 1.
In our experience we have removed many oil pressure regulators from engines that have been running a maximum bypass pressure as low as 50-55 psi, This is around a 30-40% Loss in Oil Pressure across the rev range. Oil pressure this low is a serious contributing factor in bearing failure within the Rotary engine. Especially the RENEIS engine built for the RX-8
The Regulator comes with 3 small shims, these are used to install in the front pressure relief valve found on the front cover of the engine.

Replacing my original regulator by the ER enhanced piece.
This one is able to set an increased of 30% of the oil pressure. I highly recommand this regulator for better lubrification and Rotary engine life.

Bought this upgrade while replacing my rusted sump, the increased oil pressure will give the engines bearings better protection as Mazda did later in the R3 engine.
